<p>Case in point: The National Society of Sales Training Executives used &#8220;Five Ring Circus&#8221; as the theme for a meeting. The emcee was dressed like a ring master. One speaker was attired as a tight-rope-walker, another as a clown. Still another displayed the costume and muscles of a circus strong man.</p>
<p>Costuming can often be connected with the subject of the speech. &#8220;The Art of Selling&#8221; might be the subject. The speaker appears as an artist. He wears a smock and tarn, possibly with a thin<br />mustache. He carries a brush and palette. Thus he &#8220;paints&#8221; a vivid, visual picture and he can actually paint his major points on a canvas mounted on a tripod.</p>
<p>Even a talk on selling as a career can be spiced. Your speaker appears in work clothes of his prior occupation. If he was an auto mechanic, he makes his talk while wearing the same cover&not;<br />alls he wore before. A hat, grease rag and tools would complete the costuming. He connects his unusual attire by telling how and why he left a mechanic&#8217;s job to become a salesperson.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Some marketing firms do not enjoy an employer-employee relationship with their salespeople. These sales companies must work exceptionally hard at conducting good sales meetings, as attendance can hardly be required when an employer-employee relationship does not exist. The salespeople are independent contractors.<br />&nbsp;<br />Because less can be required, attendance at meetings is often low. Further, some of the people attending may not be very productive. Under these conditions, a jackpot drawing can do a lot toward improving the situation.</p>
<p>As people enter the meeting room, they sign slips of paper which are put in a large bowl. When the meeting begins, a slip is drawn from the bowl and the name is read aloud. The person whose name is drawn must prove he has made at least a minimum number of sales since the previous meeting. If he can do this he receives the jackpot.</p>
<p>This type of drawing is good for several reasons: it helps get people to the meeting, it encourages them to get there on time, it gets them there with a sale or two to their credit, and it adds energy to the meeting. </p>
<p>Perhaps a promptness drawing or some sort of jackpot will give a flair of showmanship to your meetings. Why not try it?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The crossover, a technique of the theater, tends to animate a meeting. Signs are carried across the stage, the bearers remaining silent. Each sign contains a major point. As the point is made verbally, it is also made visually.</p>
<p>Another use of such signs is in providing humor. As an example, the point of a speaker&#8217;s talk might be, &#8220;Know your merchandise.&#8221; At the proper time someone crosses with a sign which states, &#8220;Only a goof &#8230;&#8221; A few steps behind him there&#8217;s another person, his sign stating, &#8220;Would ever fail &#8230;&#8221; Then comes the third person, his sign saying, &#8220;To know his merchandise!&#8221;</p>
<p>All crossovers are rehearsed to perfect the timing. Persons crossing the stage act casual&mdash;even a little indifferent.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Planned interruptions add zest to the staging of a program. Instead of every new participant being introduced, one of them &#8220;interrupts&#8221; by approaching the speakers&#8217; stand at the proper moment. He barges in with a wise crack or two. Before making his presentation, he is finally introduced. A planned interruption is even more surprising when someone in the audience interrupts the proceedings. Questions are often planted among members of the audience. Planted questions are nothing more than planned interruptions.</p>
<p>Then there&#8217;s the telephone, which can be located near the speakers&#8217; stand and ring at a certain time. Not only does the interruption by ringing give a different flavor, but the ensuing one-way telephone conversation can be quite meaningful. It can start the introduction of the next speaker or the next subject. It can serve as a call from an important person who could not attend the meeting. It can represent a complaining customer, or help clinch a major point.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For meetings lasting a day or longer, the element of suspense can work wonders. There are several ways to rig up a candle so that it will dramatically trigger some type of action. </p>
<p>It could eventually burn down to a fuse, in this manner setting off a small firecracker. Or it could burn down to a string, finally severing the string with its tiny flame. The triggering action should cause something important to happen, or at least be the signal for something important. It could signal the unveiling of a new product or the naming of a contest winner. </p>
<p>The candle is lit at the start of the meeting. Everyone is asked to estimate the exact time the triggering action will take place. An appropriate reward is offered for the best guess. This helps create interest and suspense. </p>
<p>To capitalize fully on the stunt, call attention to the candle at intervals during the meeting.<br />And those who like things cold instead of hot can forego all this hullabaloo with a candle, and accomplish the same thing with a block of ice. </p>
<p>The name of a contest winner is written on a slip of paper, placed in a waterproof envelope, and frozen in the center of a large block of ice. Or a new product makes its initial appearance in this way, having been frozen inside a block of ice.</p>
<p>An important new sales tool, details of a new merchandising plan, or the outline of a new advertising campaign are other items that might be dramatized either with a candle or a block of ice.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Every salesperson does better when he has a goal. After all, how can he hit the bull&#8217;s eye unless he has a target at which to shoot? Since goals spur salespeople on to greater accomplishments, sales meetings have often been based on goals.</p>
<p>For example, an enterprising sales supervisor arranged an unusual but successful meeting . . .</p>
<p>When people entered the meeting room they were surprised to find a beautiful new car on display. They found a flashy speedboat, pictures of a lovely new home, a chic model wearing the latest fashions, and several other attractions. Each item was tagged so that persons viewing it could tell what had to be done to earn it. </p>
<p>These were not prizes, but were suggested goals. During the meeting the value of goals was discussed, and all present were urged to set goals for themselves.</p>
<p>The idea paid off handsomely. It caused increased effort on the part of nearly everyone on the sales staff! It also put showmanship in the meeting, causing it to be anything but run-of-the-mill. </p>
<p>Incidentally, when arranging a meeting of this type you can probably borrow the merchandise from local merchants.</p>
<p>A variation of the foregoing plan has been used in connection with Christmas. Suitable merchandise was displayed in the meeting room. Items included toasters and roasters, as well as luxury items, including jewelry, watches, and luggage. The meeting was conducted in November.</p>
<p>The articles of merchandise were suggested as short range goals&mdash;Christmas presents.</p>
<p>The audience was told how many extra sales would finance the purchase of each item. Most salesmen wanted Christmas presents for their families and worked hard to earn the articles desired.</p>
<p>Of course, the merchandise could have been offered as prizes, but the details are not our concern here. The objective of this section is to show how to put variety in sales meetings.</p>
